Day School Or Boarding School?
Most students who are part of the independent system are day pupils. These students more often than not come from a wider area than day state school students. The children can sometimes have their home 20-25 miles away. Traveling distances should really be considered carefully if you think day school is your preferred choice for your child. Consider rail and bus links and if you like the look of a school, but it seems difficult to get to, check whether it runs its own bus service, as many do. If not, the travel may be able to be split between parents who reside in the same area.
You might like to think about the possible benefits of giving your child and boarding school education. You have a wider choice of schools and you avoid the trouble and expense of daily travel. Being away from home during term time is something that most children enjoy but it is understood that boarding school is not suitable for every child. Many students have a mix of boarding and day school experience – frequently within the same school.
Weekly boarding or flexible boarding are options that have increased in popularity recently. Children travel home at the weekends which works well for parents who both have jobs.When both parents are tied down by a full time job, private school often helps to free up restrications on time. It could even work to improve the quality time that both parents are a able to spend with their children at the end of a busy week. A large proportion of parents send their children to boarding schools that are close to the family home. Or, if the parents are often out of the country or moved around a lot in their work, they tend to pick schools near family or friends.
To help you make the decision of which boarding school is the right one, make a list of suitable ones and write down the pros and cons for each one. Most boarding schools are open to taking day pupils also. Your child could start as a day pupil but enjoy the flexibility of being able to convert to boarding later. Many day children, particularly in preparatory schools, take the opportunity to be occasional boarders for a few nights a year. Boarding schools have lots of options and flexibitly so chances are you will find one that is right for you
